Parents can convey important positive impressions about reading when they read themselves.
Reading together is a time for closeness.
These memories are lasting and will develop children’s love for books and reading lifelong. |
- Let the reader choose the book
- Give plenty of encouragement
- If there are more than five errors in a hundred the text is too difficult
- Focus on pre-reading, reading and rereading and post reading
|
- Discuss the cover, the title and some illustrations
- Tell the readers any names that are unfamiliar with e.g. people, places
|
- If the reader has difficulty with a word or makes a mistake that doesn’t make sense. WAIT → WAIT → WAIT → WAIT → The reader may solve it.
- Say ..“ go back and read again and get your mouth ready for the sound.” As their knowledge in reading grows, ask further questions.
- “Does that look right?” “Does that make sense?” “ Does it sound right?”
- If the word is not decoded, tell the reader.
|
- Play games together which provide enjoyment and teach social skills, e.g. taking turns, explaining rules, congratulating efforts, reading the instructions.
- Provide opportunities for your child to listen and speak and read for a variety of purposes, e.g. telling jokes, riddles, reading recipes ,giving direction, elaborating on details.
- Watch and discuss television news reports, documentaries, sports, drama, comedies etc.
- Visit the Tauranga library regularly.
|
- Assist your child to locate information in books and use computer technology together.
- Help your child develop a rich vocabulary through books, experiences and discussions.
- Get them to think deeper……how would you..? What would happen if..?
- Develop an independent learner…give descriptive praise
e.g. “well done, you went back to the beginning of the sentence and tried it again.”
